Instructor: Heide Martin
Haystack Studio: Wood
Materials Fee: $100, see below
Enrollment Limit: 10

Class Description:

In this class, students will build a woven Shaker Tape stool. Beginning with pre-milled parts, students will work with both hand tools and machinery to complete their stools. They will learn how to safely use machines to cut their components to length. Students will learn about mortise and tenon joinery and domino construction, and use these skills to assemble their stools. They will also have the opportunity to add additional details to their stools through the use of hand and machine tools.

In addition to building their stools, the students will learn the basics of Shaker Tape weaving and will be given the opportunity to design their own weave pattern. Students will end the class with a completed stool woven in Shaker Tape to a pattern of their own design. Over the weekend, students will also be exposed to a number of weave materials and techniques, including: Danish Cord, paper rush, binder cane, ash splint, and lace cane. This is a beginner-level course, and does not require any experience in woodworking or seat weaving.

Materials:

A materials kit will be provided for each student. Students will supply their own Shaker Tape and will have the option to purchase Danish cord on-site during the weekend. Kit cost is $100.
