2 Galleries // 200 Years: June 12 – July 28, 2020. A joint exhibition at the Center for Maine Craft + Maine Craft Portland.
April 2020 Update: The MCA’s 2020 Maine bicentennial celebration of craft has changed in scope due to disruptions to planning resulting from COVID-19. The exhibition was to take place in the MCA’s two retail galleries: The Center for Maine Craft in West Gardiner, and Maine Craft Portland, located in Portland’s arts district. However, it will now only take place at Maine Craft Portland with dates to be announced once we re-open later in the year.
Center for Maine Craft seeks craft objects and imagery highlighting Maine’s vital industries, natural resources, and historical trade, especially in reference to the industries which utilized the Kennebec River flowing through nearby Gardiner. Additionally, work honoring the future sustainability of Maine’s natural environment is encouraged.
Maine Craft Portland seeks proposals of work referencing Portland’s many historical monuments and landmarks, including ‘Our Lady of Victories’, ‘John Ford’, ‘Longfellow’, ‘Michael’, ‘Lincoln Fountain’, and ‘Seven’.
Artists may submit work to both exhibitions.
In addition to traditional fine craft objects the MCA seeks specialty foods, cards, art prints, photography, personal care products, literature, and apparel commemorating Maine’s bicentennial celebration, to be displayed throughout the store as complementary items to the exhibited work.
Work will be selected based on craftsmanship, variety of price points, storyline, and historical accuracy. Qualifying work will be well conceived and expertly executed in Maine. It will be made by hand or with the use of appropriate equipment and tools and utilize traditional craft techniques. All artists must have participated in the MCA’s jury process and be a current member of the organization at the Basic or Professional level to qualify. The MCA will accept media in the following categories: baskets, ceramics, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, stone and wood.
