Peter Brown is a designer and maker of artisan furniture. His company, Meadowlark Designs, is located in Lyman, Maine. Peter also has a degree in sustainable business practices which inspires and guides him in the use of materials that are sustainably sourced, processes that leave no adverse footprint, and products with safe and long life-cycles.
Peter will point out the differences between commercial type wood-oil and wax products and the pure plant based (and food safe) oils and waxes which they are created to assimilate. He’ll review and demonstrate the application and curing processes, the beneficial properties for the wood, the environment, and health, and bring examples of the various stages of completion. He’ll also talk about and demonstrate non-oil polishing techniques and compounds for bringing brilliance to bare wood products.
Plant based and naturally occurring oils and waxes have many benefits including:
- Better integration with existing elements in wood
- Durable, lasting beauty that maintains the true character of the wood
- No Toxicity!!! Either in the making, using, or disposal
- Food safe, environmentally safe finishes
- Peter will also demonstrate a polishing technique that uses no additional oils at all!
Peter will make 5″ x 9″ cheese servers prior to the workshop. Each student will have the opportunity to try a simple finish and take the server home.
All levels welcome.
