The Center for Maine Craft is looking for an inventory associate who will be responsible for a full range of inventory, sales and travel information. A successful candidate will be a reliable professional, possess a great attention to detail, excellent record keeping and communication skills. Ability to work alongside a great retail sales team, have strong customer service and friendly personality is required. This is a new position, sharing some duties with Center sales associates, but created to support the management team with specific inventory needs and expertise.

The Center for Maine Craft
The Center, a project of the Maine Crafts Association, is home to a retail gallery and an exhibition gallery together representing more than 300 Maine craft artists annually. The Maine Crafts Association opened the Center in November 2008 in an effort to support Maine artists and organizations through retail sales in a high traffic location. The Center increases awareness of the significant role craft artists play in Maine’s culture, economy and heritage. The Center is located in West Gardiner, Maine at the West Gardiner Service Plaza and is also home to a Visitor Information Center that assists travelers with information, maps, routes and other travel inquiries.

Hours and Pay:
Inventory associate is needed for 20-35 hours/week May through December 2017. Hours may be reduced Oct-Nov and Jan-May.
Must be available nights, weekends and Holidays.
Pay is $14/hour.

Job Description
Inventory Assistant will be responsible for physical inventory, creating and receiving purchase orders, handling fine craft objects, maintaining display and store appearance, maintaining and delegating precise tagging of inventory, making and processing retail sales and returns. The inventory assistant will communicate clearly about the Maine Crafts Association and Center’s artists, craft objects, mission and programs to the various constituencies who visit the Center each day. Inventory associate will report to and assist Center for Maine Craft Manager and Assistant Manager with additional projects and events as needed.


  • Greeting Center visitors
  • Complete sales transactions
  • Maintain and monitor store inventory protocols
  • Make and receive purchase orders from vendors in a timely manner
  • Tag and restock inventory
  • Process damaged items and vendor payouts
  • Assist customers with product, travel and sale questions
  • Assist sales associates in completing returns/exchanges
  • Educate customers about Maine craft
  • Assist Center manager and assistant manager with projects
  • Complete opening/closing duties and other Center procedures

Advocate for The Center for Maine Craft’s visibility, stature, and significance within the community.


  • Inventory and retail experience a big plus
  • General knowledge or interest in, hand-made craft (or willingness to learn!)
  • Attention to detail and record keeping skills
  • Able to multi-task and work independently
  • Knowledge of Point of Sale Systems and comfort with common computer hardware and software
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Strong Customer Service
  • Ability to foster a cooperative and friendly work environment
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, nights and weekends
  • Knowledge of Maine tourism and local economy
