Hopeful | Kimberly Bentley

“What would it mean to get a second chance at life? I know as a mother, I would risk anything for a second chance to make life better for my kids. I had a friend say to me when we first started to see on the news that parents were being separated from their children at the border, that it was ‘bad parenting’. What?? They are fleeing countries torn apart by war and drugs. They are desperate to save their children. I can’t relate to a world torn apart, i grew up in a very middle class family in Bangor Maine. But as soon as I had children I found out there were real monsters out there that could hurt them. I still worry about them even though they are adults.

So, when I first thought about the show theme – Holy Grail – the words that popped into my head were, “immigrants” and then the word, HOPEFUL. History has shown people fleeing to America, because they want a second chance at a better life. They were HOPEFUL.”

This piece is currently on display at Maine Craft Portland as part of the special exhibition, “The Holy Grail: Miraculous Items of Power“.
