Salt-Fired Porcelain Poetry Tumbler | Jean Hardy

A sweet gift for a writer, these wheel thrown, softly squared porcelain tumblers are inscribed with handwritten poetry using a mishima inlay technique. Fired at high temps in a salt kiln, the inscriptions are sealed in a glassy clear glaze. Flashing slip lines the inside of the tumblers in a deep earthy tone. Color variations happen naturally on the surface of the pots as the clay and salt react to the atmosphere of the kiln during firing. Many factors including the mug’s location in the kiln, surrounding pottery, and firing temperatures make these beautiful variations both unpredictable and pleasantly surprising.

About the Artist

About Jean Hardy:

“A potter from the start, I grew up on the edge of the Raritan Formation, a geological formation in NJ associated with lots of naturally occurring earthenware clay. Digging clay and making objects from it was one of many childhood activities that took place outdoors. Studying pottery with many teachers and learning much on my own as well, I maintain a practice of making pottery that gets me through life.”
