Emily began working with MCA as an intern for the Haystack Workshop Weekend program in 2016. In 2017, she joined MCA staff as a program coordinator. She continues to coordinate MCA programming and now serves as head of the HR Department.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Emily received a B.F.A in Craft and B.S. in Art Education from Kutztown University. She moved to Maine in 2014 for a 1 year internship with studio jeweler and gallery owner, Cara Romano. During this internship she assisted with the opening of (KoT) Contemporary Functional Craft in Ellsworth, ME. Since then, she has made a home in mid-coast Maine.
In addition to working with MCA, Emily owns and operates a contemporary jewelry business. Her work can be seen in galleries and juried craft shows around the country, and also online at www.EmilyShafferStudio.com
Emily is the recipient of the J. Allen Pawling Crafts Memorial Award, an American Crafts Week 30 Under 30 Rising Star, a 2017 Halstead Grant Finalist, and 2018 Halstead Grant Winner for emerging jewelry designers.
She’s passionate about the physical act of making, but also sees the importance of running a business and very much enjoys that aspect of the field.
