MCA Weekend Workshop @ Haystack

Binding an Artist’s Notebook

Instructor: Anna Low
Haystack Studio: Graphics
Enrollment Limit: 12
Materials Fees: $50.00
Level: All Levels Welcome

Class Description:

Don’t call it a junk journal; call it an artist’s notebook, the inside of your brain bound between covers or your handbook of wacky ideas and inspiration. In this workshop, we’ll learn two different hand-sewn styles of bookbinding, the Coptic stitch, an ancient way to bind a book, and the Secret Belgian Binding, a contemporary one. Both bindings are beautiful, versatile, and durable ways to make journals or artist books. They also both require only hand tools, so you’ll be able to continue making your own books at home.

In addition to learning these two binding techniques, our goal for the weekend will be to make a notebook that inspires. We’ll play with making pages that include bits of collage, gel prints, foam stamps, pocket pages, and ephemera. You’ll leave Haystack with two notebooks filled with creative prompts and inspiration to fill your journals.

Materials + Fees: $50.00

Students will be provided with all the materials necessary for the workshop. The fee will be added to your invoice.
