Community Guidelines: Creating a Culture of Belonging

Our shared goal at the Maine Crafts Association is to lead and contribute to a balanced, thriving arts ecosystem in Maine. We believe that the arts are essential to healthy, resilient communities, and we are committed to creating programs and resources that help artists grow and connect with others in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. We require that everyone be conscientious of their words and actions.

Any and all artists and community partners who engage with our programs or attend our events will share in our commitment to create safe, inclusive, curious spaces for all:

  • We are respectful of shared space by communicating our needs and respecting other people’s boundaries and belongings.
  • We listen to others, consider multiple perspectives, and avoid dominating conversations.
  • We speak with integrity and honesty, understanding that our words have power.
  • We avoid making assumptions about a person’s identity or lived experience, or jumping to conclusions about what others think or feel.
  • We acknowledge mistakes and hold others accountable, and then, move forward.
  • If someone is asking you for support, do your best to help them find a solution or direct them to someone on staff who can help.

MCA does not tolerate discrimination or harassment of any kind. Behavior that is, intentionally or unintentionally, disrespectful or harmful based on an individual’s race, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical ability, physical appearance, body size, age, religion, marital or veteran status, or any other vector of identity is unacceptable and will be addressed.

If MCA determines that a harmful incident has occurred, we may initially seek resolution through conversation and accommodations, depending on the needs and willingness of those involved. However, all individuals are expected to uphold these Community Guidelines. Should any actions compromise the safety, respect, or positive experience of our community, MCA reserves the right to investigate and, if necessary, take corrective measures, which may include removal from a program or event.

Our priority is ensuring that every individual feels welcome, safe, and empowered to participate fully in MCA’s programs and activities.
