Long Island Pottery Studio Manager and Lead Instructor

Description: Contributes to a safe and enjoyable pottery experience for the Long Island community and visiting guests. Teaches pottery to students of all ages. Ensures studio is clean and organized to a high standard. Manage efficient and safe operations of studio equipment.

Supervises: Two junior staff

Responsibilities:
1. Set a positive and professional example for all participants
2. Creates and delivers a schedule of classes for youth and adults
3. Manage kiln schedules and firing.
4. Monitor supplies & materials
5. Oversees junior staff studio assistants (assigned studio tasks)
6. Submit accurate time sheets, rosters, attendance logs
7. Assign weekly tasks for assistants as per your project needs
8. Assists in marketing pottery programs

Competencies: 
* Instructor should be highly motivated, enthusiastic, and be detail oriented
* Past teaching experience in a community art setting
* High level of knowledge of pottery methods and practices, including materials, techniques,
equipment, and studio organization
* Sufficient skill as a potter to lead class and resolve pottery making issues
* Support budget development, expense tracking and report supply needs.

Other tasks: 
● Follow studio policies for kiln rental, studio use, shipping of pottery & studio sales.
● Call meetings for pottery staff
● Support Open House, Wharf Street Festival, or fund raising events.
● Secure studio space & equipment after shift.
● Turn in all attendance logs, and classroom data at end of season.
● Exit Review w/ director(s).

Employment Details: This position is part-time for the Long Island Pottery Studio Program. Job will begin late May with several hours a week for planning, then 20 hours a week from July 1 to August 15 for six weeks of classes, and then an additional 14 hours to close out the season. Total hours not to exceed 160. Pay of $35/hour. Paycheck issued bi-weekly.

Schedule: Flexible schedule created to overlap with adult members and youth instructors. Flexibility to adjust hours to support workshops, reservations, or kiln firings. Weekly communication with volunteer Pottery Team. Adult workshops are typically one night per week, handbuilding. Youth workshops can be multiple days per week or single workshop.

About the Studio: The Pottery Studio is located in the Community Center on Long Island, accessible by Casco Bay Lines. It is directly across from the ferry dock. There are two electric wheels, one kick wheel, and two electric kilns. A volunteer Pottery Team of adult studio members assists in the program management.

Employer: Town of Long Island, Recreation Department.

The Animal Orphanage in Old Town is hosting a Furball Festival on June 28, 9 am – 4 pm and is seeking 80 local artists as vendors to join the fair! The Furball Festival is in celebration of The Animal Orphanage rescuing and finding homes for stray and abandoned animals in our community for 35 years. The vendor fee is $50, all proceeds go directly toward the Animal Orphanage. Vendors can expect an outdoor booth space and will need to bring their own tents and display materials.
