Class Description:

Come learn blacksmithing in an enthusiastic and inclusive environment! In this workshop, students will be shown how to heat up metal, swing a hammer at the anvil, and forge hot steel to create their own unique tools for the home. Projects will include functional items such as fire pokers, cooking utensils, and hooks. Students will be taught basic forging techniques, including tapering, twisting, bending, punching, and cutting. Students will also be shown various decorative techniques and given the opportunity to design and personalize their one-of-a-kind forged tools. Come learn the art of blacksmithing and go home with tools for your home that will last a lifetime!

Materials + Fees:

Estimated Fee: $40 – $60

This fee will be collected when students check out for the weekend and will depend on the amount of steel used during the weekend per participant.

Students are expected to bring the following items:

  • Sketchbook + drawing tools
  • Natural fiber clothing (ex: Cotton, wool, or other natural fibers. No synthetics!)
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Ear plugs

About the Instructor-

Anna Koplik received her BFA in Jewelry from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating, she shifted her focus to blacksmithing and began traveling, working, and teaching at crafts schools and as a journeyman architectural smith, and going on adventures whenever possible. Her personal work focuses mainly on tool and utensil making, and combining functionality with a refined, delicate aesthetic. Anna has worked at a variety of shops, including Atlas Forge, Caleb Kullman Studio, and Spirit Ironworks, as well as taught at various craft schools such as Penland, Touchstone, and John C. Campbell.
