Hanky Panky: Screenprinting on Fabric Squares

Class Description:

Print your own handkerchiefs, bandanas, and fabric in this workshop. Participants will learn the process of screen printing on cotton fabric using photo emulsion and water based fabric inks. We will focus on creating images by hand (i.e. no computers!) by drawing, painting, paper cutting, and/or using found objects. We will also go over basic pattern design methods. Participants will come away with screenprinting skills and a multitude of printed squares.

Student Supplied Materials List: 
  • Drawing Supplies: favorite markers, pens, and or paint brushes to use with india ink or acrylic paint. Posca Paint Markers are also great to bring if you have them, any color.
  • Exacto knife with fresh Blades
  • 1 roll of 3″ Clear Packing tape- not cloudy
  • 25 or more 12″x12″- 17″x17″ pieces Cotton Fabric, clean and ironed – any colors, plain (not patterned). Bringing multiple colors is great! Additional hemmed white 17″x17″ handkerchiefs for sale by instructor for $3 each).
  • Water-based screen printing for fabric/textiles inks in specialty colors (fluorescents, metallics, etc). We will have a set of basic colors: Red Yellow Blue White Black for everyone to mix and use.  Any brand is fine as long as it’s water-based.

About the Instructor-

Pilar Nadal is the established Printer and Director of Pickwick Independent Press in Portland, Maine. For the last 10 years, She has been printing on hankies, bandanas and fabric to explore color, shape, pattern and function. Pilar currently teaches printmaking through Pickwick as well as the Southern Maine Community College.
