MCA Weekend Workshop @ Haystack

Class Description:
In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of welding and sheet metal fabrication through the making of a small steel object. Students will learn to use the MIG and TIG welders, as well as other tools, including an angle grinder and an English wheel to make a steel form of their choosing. We’ll end the class with a demonstration and discussion of a variety of finishes, including patinas and paints.
Materials + Fees:
Estimated Fee: $50 – $100
This fee will be collected when students check out for the weekend and will depend on the amount of steel used during the weekend.
Student Supplied Materials List:
- Sketchbook + drawing tools
- Natural fiber clothing (ex: Cotton, wool, or other natural fibers. No synthetics!)
- Closed-toe shoes
- Ear plugs
About the Instructor-
Sophie received her MFA in Furniture Design and Woodworking from San Diego State University, and BFA in Sculpture and Drawing from SUNY Purchase College. She has exhibited her work across the country, including Blue Spiral 1 Gallery (NC), the Center for Art in Wood (PA), and the Metal Museum (TN), and has been fortunate to receive several grants, fellowships, and residencies to help advance her career, including the John D. Mineck Fellowship in 2022. Sophie currently teaches at Kutztown University, and has taught workshops at A Workshop of Our Own, Penland School of Craft, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, the Appalachian Center for Craft, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
