Video featuring Chong & Judi Lim of Island Designs

Meet Chong & Judi Lim —

“Chong Lim is a native of Seoul, Korea who received a BFA in painting and printmaking from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His representational designs are inspired by the beauty of the flora and fauna in Maine–some say—with a Far Eastern aspect. Judi is one of those Massachusetts people who always wanted to live in Maine. They began their business, Island Designs, on Great Cranberry Island, later moving to Bar Harbor, then to Scarborough. Working together in their studio, Chong and Judi make embossed paper and copper pieces. Chong hand chisels his designs into metal “dies” which Judi attaches to their press to produce raised images on paper and copper. Color is added to the paper using watercolor paint, brush pens, colored pencils, pastels and roll leaf. The copper is colored by flame painting and patina.” – Chong & Judi

Chong and Judi Lim are MCA Partner Guild Level Members and will be exhibiting this fall at the Guild Fine Craft Show: Brunswick, located inside Fort Andross Mill Complex on October 22 + 23. They’ve also been accepted into the Portland Fine Craft Show on August 27, a one day event attracting 100+ craft artists from the greater northeast, both of which are now run by Shop Maine Craft.

Why a video?

Maine Craft Content subjects can choose between a professional video, suite of photos or to be featured on a podcast. Click here to learn more and view completed projects.

“We chose the video format because we are frequently asked by viewers, how we make the designs raise up and how the color is applied. We wanted to tell the story of the processes involved in creating embossed images on two materials. The video will be added to two digital picture frames: the first in our space in Island Artisans in Bar Harbor and the second to be included in our display at fine craft shows.” – Chong & Judi

The Onion Foundation

The 2022 Maine Craft Content Project is generously funded by the Onion Foundation, the Maine Arts Commission and individual donors. With that funding the Maine Crafts Association provided eight Maine craft artists with new online content to support their practices, tell their stories and grow their businesses.

MCA thanks the Onion Foundation, the Maine Arts Commission and the individual donors for their support of our efforts and artists!

The Maine Crafts Association is a 501(c)(3) which builds upon Maine’s rich craft traditions by nurturing a vibrant, supportive, inclusive craft community with educational programs and resources.

Our ability to accomplish our mission and help artists thrive is reliant on individual contributions.
