About Lana Plantae Yarns

Desmond, Marcia and their children Kaya and Desi have been raising alpaca and sheep on their farm in Buxton for 20 years, Marcia, a native of Ogunquit, Maine spent many years in the Caribbean on the island of St. Kitts. where Desmond is from.

After living in Portland, Maine for a while the family moved on to the farm and quickly added alpacas and sheep. Desmond had a flock of sheep as a child in St. Kitts, so his livestock experience proved very helpful. Marcia had a horticulture degree and a love of plants. Of course, they were going to dye their wool with plant material.

“After 20 years, we now know about wool and its subjective and objective characteristics and we know the chemistry of natural dye work, but we have learned so much more. We know when to offer help to alpacas and sheep to deliver their babies, we know appropriate husbandry and care for optimal health. We mark the passage of time by seasonal events. The barn swallows are always the last arrival in spring and often the first to depart in the fall. Kestrels are very attentive and patient parents. The goldenrod and wild black raspberries are ready at the same time. The rhythms of a small farm in Maine
