Learn Sgraffito…FROM HOME!
with Tim Christensen
As the COVID-19 outbreak unfolds, it’s become clear that we all need to stay home. Well known artist, Tim Christensen, has come up with a creative way to stay connected and learn new techniques from the safety of your home! Come learn the theory, history, and technique of sgraffito via video instruction.
In this class, work on prepared porcelain forms (yours or supplied by Tim) to create vibrant, dynamic, and timeless designs in this, the oldest of historical documentation media. Create a beautiful communicative etching on the surface of a functional piece of porcelain pottery! Participants will receive a hand thrown porcelain cup and sgraffito tool mailed via UPS; then, while in the video conference with the group, will etch in black and white on the surface of the pot with instruction and guidance of Tim. We will be together apart! Pots can be shipped back (in the same packaging they were received) to be fired (just cover shipping, the firing is free), or fire the work in your own kiln. All tools and materials will be shipped, and no experience is necessary. Extra slipped forms and tools are available for purchase. All levels welcome.
Instructor Bio
Tim Christensen is a well known ceramic artist living and working in Coastal Maine. He creates black and white etchings on porcelain, thinking of his work as more historical document than functional pottery. He has written a book, made a mega-transect of the world’s oceans, lived off the land in DownEast Maine, braved pirates and storms, taught art to thousands of kids, and lived as a hermit, all in service of better recording the world in which we live, in the time in which we live. He has a studio in Portland, Maine, and in Roque Bluffs, Maine.
