From the Democratic Republic of Congo to Portland, Maine

Adele Masengo Ngoy’s journey from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Portland, Maine, is a testament to resilience and passion. A high-end fashion designer in her home country, Adele relocated to the U.S. in 2000 as a refugee with her three young children. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language, she rebuilt her life and career in Portland. She founded Adele Masengo Designs, offering custom wedding gowns, special occasion attire, and everyday business wear. Additionally, she owns Antoine’s Tailor Shop and Formal Wear, a staple in Portland’s fashion scene.

Empowering Women Through Fashion

Beyond her design work, Adele is deeply committed to empowering immigrant women. In 2011, she founded Women United Around the World, a nonprofit organization that promotes leadership development among female immigrants. The organization offers sewing classes, workshops, and networking opportunities, helping women gain skills and confidence to pursue better educational and professional opportunities.

A Unique Design Aesthetic

Adele’s designs are known for their vibrant colors, bold African prints, and modern silhouettes. She skillfully blends traditional Congolese patterns with contemporary styles, creating pieces that are both culturally rich and fashion-forward. Her work not only celebrates her heritage but also brings a unique perspective to Maine’s fashion landscape.
