Kazeem Lawal, the visionary behind Portland Trading Co., brings a global perspective and a deeply personal design ethos to Maine’s creative scene. Born in San Mateo, California, and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Kazeem grew up immersed in a culture that valued tailored clothing and personal presentation. He later returned to the U.S. to study electrical engineering, eventually landing in Portland in 2008 for a role with Fairpoint Communications.
After the company changed form, Kazeem pivoted. Immersing himself in Portland’s community, he volunteered widely and explored creative ventures—ultimately founding Portland Trading Co. in 2012.
Portland Trading Co: Where Style Meets Story
Located in Portland’s Old Port, Portland Trading Co. is a curated lifestyle shop offering men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, home goods, and vintage finds. Many of the items are designed in-house or created in collaboration with local makers. The store is a direct reflection of Kazeem’s aesthetic—elegant, practical, and deeply considered.
His philosophy centers on authenticity and personal style. He encourages customers to choose pieces that express who they are rather than follow trends. His design collaborations, including a private label with Darien Lonnegan, highlight his commitment to craftsmanship and Maine-based talent.

Kazeem’s influence extends well beyond fashion retail. He has helped foster Portland’s cultural community through events like the Maine African Film Festival and continues to use his platform to spotlight local creatives. His shop serves as both a retail space and a cultural hub—blending global influences with local spirit.
Kazeem’s work will be featured on the runway and in the Style Market at STITCH 2025, where his pieces will represent the unique intersection of craft, culture, and personal expression that defines his career.
