Thank you to all the workshop participants!

Workshop Description:

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore an introduction to traditional basket weaving techniques with round, regionally wild harvested, flexible fibers. Great variations will occur! No prior basketweaving experience is required, though strong hands and enthusiasm are recommended.

Materials will be provided by the instructor with the option and encouragement for participants to harvest additional materials in advance. (Harvesting guidance will be emailed a week or more in advance). Additionally, participants will be taken on a quick tour of the Audubon property to learn what to look for when harvesting their own materials in the wild.

Participants can expect to leave the workshop with the basic understanding and skills on what to gather for materials and how to create flat bottom baskets. Snacks will be provided, registrants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

Masking is required in all Maine Audubon buildings and facilities at this time. Please see the registration details for Covid-19 vaccination requirements.

Instructor Bio:

Rebecca May Verrill is a native of the western foothills of Maine where she first developed her love of crafting objects from the natural world. She learned the folk tradition of basketry while living in Taos, NM where she lived for 10 years primarily working with clay. Influenced by strong craft traditions in the southwest and harvesting wild red willow along the banks of the Rio Grande to craft vessels of a different sort, Rebecca easily added basketry to her creative practice. She received her Master of Fine Arts from SUNY New Paltz in 2013 and currently maintains a studio practice in Portland, ME, where she teaches the occasional workshop, exhibits work regionally and nationwide.
