From Straight to Curvy: Create a Sculptural LED Lamp

Class Description:

Join us for a fun, hands-on weekend exploring the art of steam-bending! Discover how heat, moisture, and a bit of muscle can transform solid wood into wiggly, curvy, and twisted shapes. We’ll begin with some bending exercises, then move on to designing and making your own unique sculptural LED desktop lamp—a perfect mix of craftsmanship, creativity, and modern design. No woodworking experience necessary —bring your curiosity, creative energy, and collaborative spirit!

Materials + Fees: $35

A materials kit will be provided for each participant. The fee will be added to your invoice after registration.

Students are asked to bring the following items:

  • safety glasses (provided, but you can bring your own if preferred)
  • hearing protection (provided, but you can bring your own if preferred)
  • closed-toed shoes
  • no loose or baggy clothing
  • hair ties if you have long hair
  • sketchbook and drawing tools

About the Instructor-

Yuri Kobayashi, originally from Japan, is a Maine-based sculptor and furniture maker. She holds a B.A. in architectural design from Musashino Art University, a woodworking certificate from Shinrin Takumi-Juku, and an M.F.A. from San Diego State University. Yuri has taught at RISD for many years and has led workshops across the U.S. and internationally. As an instructor and lead fellow at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, ME, she combines traditional techniques with her sense of wonder to create compelling sculptures and furniture.
